An Evening of Short Comedies - May 1 - 3, 2008

Here's some updated information about "AN EVENING OF SHORT COMEDIES", which the Christ Church Drama Project will present from May 1 to 3, 2008 at 8:00 p.m.

The first half of the show will feature three short plays by Donald B. Campbell. "Born to Shop!", "The High Road" and "Perfect For Dancing" are all comedies. There are some prairie and Saskatoon references in these plays that local audiences should particularly enjoy. (NOTE: For information about my writing credentials, see "About Me" on this page.) The second half of the evening will be "The Actor's Nightmare", a very popular short play by noted American playwright Christopher Durang. It's a comedic look at every actor's worst nightmare--being thrust onto the stage at the last minute with little preparation.

David Creelman, who has a great deal of theatrical training and experience (in Canada and the U.S.), is the director. Most of the cast members have a wealth of acting experience in various venues. I'm happy to be one of them.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT MY THREE SHORT PLAYS:

(including cast lists in alphabetical order)

An earlier version of "Born To Shop!" was performed at the Saskatoon Fringe Theatre Festival in 1990. It received enthusiastic responses from audiences and a very positive review in NeWest Review magazine.

(cast for this production: Kathrine Flaherty, Regan Flaherty)

An earlier version of "The High Road" was chosen by Regina's Globe Theatre to be part of its "On the Line" festival of short plays in 2003. The audience reaction was very positive. Cavan Cunningham, who plays the mayor ("Fitzy") on CTV's "Corner Gas", was the lead actor.

(cast for this production: Christopher Brown, Judy Herbert, Tom Nieman)

I think that "Perfect For Dancing" is particularly meaningful for people who grew up on a farm (as I did) or in a small town. I wrote the first draft several years ago, and this will be the play's premiere production.

(cast: Cathy Anderson, Kathrine Flaherty, Regan Flaherty, Tom Nieman)

Classic Radio Shows Live On Stage - Feb. 2, 2008

Our second annual evening of classic radio shows performed on stage was very successful. Even though the temperature was -20, 86 people attended the event. Below is the media release for the production, followed by the credits.

Tune in to Christ Church Drama Project's "Radio Waves"

Do you want to travel back in time? You can with Christ Church Drama Project’s presentation of famous radio shows of the 40's and 50’s. Episodes of "Our Miss Brooks" (title of episode - "Board of Education Day"), "Father Knows Best" and "Dragnet" will be re-created in a 'live-to-air' setting, on stage before you, our studio audience. See and hear how sound effects are produced for broadcast; remember the vintage commercials and a much simpler time. Let your imagination carry you back to an era when radio was king.

Join us on Saturday, February 2nd, 7:30 pm at Christ Church Anglican, located at Ave E and 28th Street West, Saskatoon. Tickets are $10, available at the door, McNally Robinson Booksellers, or by calling the church office at 242-0165 to reserve.
